Some time ago, I was sharing with a friend how fascinated I was about the Ikorodu Bois. This amazing group which comprises 3 siblings – Babatunde Sanni (23) Muiz Sanni (15) Malik Sanni (10), and their cousin, Fawas Aina, (13) – have become famous for recreating multi-million dollar music videos and movie trailers using common household items like brooms, carton boxes, water guns, and local wheelbarrows to replicate luxury cars used in Hollywood movies.
These talented youngsters who live in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, Nigeria (that explains the name Ikorodu bois) have mimicked numerous music videos of Nigerian musicians like Davido, Tekno, Burna Boy as well as blockbuster movies like Money Heist, Bad Boyz 2 and Extraction. Their imitations of these movie trailers got the attention of Hollywood and the streaming media giant – Netflix. In fact, Netflix was so impressed by their creativity that they got them top-quality equipment to help their video production.
In an interview with CNN, Babatunde Sanni – who edits the videos and doubles as the group’s manager said, “Our house is like a comedy house, we play too much.” When asked about why they started to push out their content online, Babatunde said, “I felt like these things we are doing in our house, why don’t we start putting them online?”. I’m sure they were not expecting the fame their creative efforts have gotten them from their little corner in Ikorodu.
Today they have a huge following on social media with over 1 million followers on Instagram. Aside from this, the Ikorodu Bois also got acknowledgements from top Hollywood Stars like Will Smith and ‘The Professor’ from the Money Heist series who liked their imitation of the series’ trailer and tweeted, “What an amazing job!!! Congrats!! Thanks a lot for this. You all are the very best”. The producers of Extraction, – the Russo Brothers – also impressed by their imitation of the Extraction Movie trailer, invited them to Hollywood for the premiere of “Extraction 2.” They tweeted; “This is awesome! We would love to have you guys at the #Extraction 2 premiere…DM us and we’ll get you there!”
The Ikorodu Bois’ story tells us that the possibilities are unlimited especially as countries, people and businesses around the world are becoming more interconnected. Today, anyone who has value to offer can be relevant at the global stage regardless of where he/she is from. This is possible by simply positioning oneself to access global opportunities. Wondering how you can do that for yourself and your brand? Here are 3 tips to help you.
- Start From Where You Are
The fact is going global starts locally. You can start where you are, making use of the resources around you. To get access to global opportunities you should first get acquitted with yourself and your immediate environment to recognize the resources you have at your disposal. As you get started, you will also find resources in your environment that keeps you aware of global trends and demands. Then you take advantage of them and attain global relevance.
- Be Consistent
I cannot emphasize this enough; consistency really is the key to success. If the Ikorodu Bois had not been consistent with their videos, they never would have caught the attention of the global audience and the Russo brothers wouldn’t have invited them to Hollywood to attend the premiere of the movie ‘Extraction 2. They recently had an interview with Steve Harvey on his show! Whatever you are doing right now, I urge you to stay consistent at it whether you feel like it or not because life respects and eventually rewards consistency.
- Ignore Naysayers
This is very important. You need to learn how to look away from the discouragement from naysayers and stay focused. Imagine the Ikorodu Bois gave in to people mocking them or social media critics who talked down on their videos, they would have stopped long ago. People might say you don’t have what the global community needs but don’t listen to them. Keep improving yourself and expanding your horizon. Eventually, you’ll get noticed and get unto the big stage.
Friend, if you put these 3 tips to work, you are on your way to gaining that global exposure you desire.
