Bring Your Dreams To Life.
In the past decade, Reality TV shows have become very popular all around the world. Shows like The Idols, X-Factor, Got Talent, The Apprentice and Big Brother are international franchises with millions of viewership and multi-million dollar value. One of my favourite reality TV shows is the Dragons’ Den, a television program which originated in Japan in 2001. First known as The Tigers of Money, it took on the name Dragon’s Den in the United Kingdom when the British version of the show started in 2005. Since then the franchise has grown to nearly 30 countries including Arab and African countries. In the show, budding entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas for not more than 3 minutes to a panel of venture capitalists (referred to as Dragons) in the hope of securing funding for their businesses. After each pitch, the Dragons have the opportunity to ask questions about the venture’s viability and negotiate possible collaborations. According to Evan Davis, who hosts the show in the United Kingdom; “The entrepreneurs don’t always have to answer (all the questions), but of course, what they choose not to address could very well affect the outcome of the pitch.” Through the show, many businesses have got the funding needed to kick-start or expand their ventures and have grown to become multi-million dollar companies afterwards. Unfortunately, a good number of entrepreneurs fail to get the investors’ buy-in for different reasons and leave with nothing.
Every time I watch the Dragons’ Den, I am reminded that every dream, brand, idea or product needs the buy-in of people to become successful. It’s the same with you. Think of yourself as a product; your success in (the market of) life is determined by how much people buy into your personal brand. We all need other people to believe in us in order to fully maximize our potential. Someone somewhere must be convinced enough to buy into your dreams for those dreams to become a reality.
Like every other product, you’ll need to effectively sell yourself to the right buyers who will be inclined to invest their resources in your dreams and vision. The truth is, every day we sell ourselves to the people around us by the decisions and actions we take. If you are not getting the desired results, it might be because you do not know how to sell effectively. Here are 3 time-tested sales principles to help you get more buy-in from people:
- Know The Product
As stated earlier, you are a product, so Know Yourself. You need to know everything about yourself to sell “you” effectively. Self-awareness is an art you should keep practising. You should be able to answer the questions; “What are my strengths?”, “What opportunities are available to me?” “How can I evolve and adapt to the ever-changing world to stay relevant?” Once you can answer these questions correctly, it becomes easier for you to identify opportunities and sell yourself more effectively.
Politician and former basketball player, Bill Bradley said “Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.” To succeed at anything, you must be persistent. If you ask any salesperson, they’ll most likely tell you their first sale was rough. But you know what distinguishes those who become successful and those who fall out? Persistence! You’ve got to learn to stick to your craft to attain whatever you want. At first, you may encounter failures and a lot of rejection, but if you push past them, you will be greatly rewarded.
- Exchange Value
Albert Einstein once advised; “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” That’s because people pay for value. People will only buy what they perceive as valuable. You could have the potential to be the best salesman on earth but you won’t make any sales if the product you’re selling offers nobody value. Ask yourself “Why should anybody invest in me?” “What value am I bringing to the table?” It is the value you provide that will incite people’s interest and buy-in, so you must have and present value.
If you internalize these simple tips and commit to them, you are on your way to living a truly value-adding life.
